An arangetram is the debut performance of an Indian classical dancer. After studying Bharatanatyam with dedication for 10-12 years, the student is deemed ready to showcase her skill, creativity, versatility, emotion, and endurance. After successfully performing a full repertoire of dances and receiving her teacher's blessings, the dancer has now completed her training and is considered a professional.

There are also many professional male Bharatanatyam dancers (the art form is not restricted to women). A male dancer's costume is different, yet decorative in its own way.
