Color Field Paintings
Inspired by the Color Field movement of the mid-1900s, my contemporary take harmonizes unusual colors, organic shapes, and a flattened perspective to invite the viewer into a highly-stylized, graphic world. These paintings command the attention of a room and start conversations.

By placing complementary colors blue and orange next to one another, each’s vibrancy is enhanced by the presence of the other. So, the viewer feels the coolness of the river and the heat of the canyon and cacti.

“Jewel’s Domain”
34” x 54” original watercolor
Private collection (commission)
The client wanted an abstract depiction of the natural world. After that, she left it up to my artistic vision. My inspiration was her backyard with its variety of plants and wildflowers. I also wanted to include her sweet dog, who trots around like she owns the place. This painting is a large-format watercolor—over twice the size of a standard, full-sheet watercolor.

“Tourist Season at the State Capitol”
11” x 15” original watercolor
Framed to 16” x 20”
Private collection
On any given day, there will be people enjoying the beautiful grounds and promenade areas of the Texas State Capitol (which is actually made of pink granite in real life). Here, I chose certain colors more for harmonizing the composition, rather than trying to be realistic.
