Contemporary Color Field Paintings

The ethos of these Contemporary Color Field paintings comes from the saturated colors, the complex elements reduced to simple, organic shapes, and the playful flattening of perspective in key areas. Some colors choices are natural, while others are unnatural. These paintings also showcase the lively granulation that is unique to watercolor.

While I try to keep up with demand, some available originals may not be shown on my website.  Contact me for latest availablility or if you are interested in commissioning a painting (taking commissions for 2026). Some of the below are available for sale as giclée prints in my online shop as well.

Contemporary Figurative Paintings

Watercolor is known for its translucency and granulation. Translucency occurs because light reflects off the white paper, through thin layers of paint (called washes), and causes the painting to have a “glowing” effect. Dark areas are created using thicker applications of washes, which block light from coming through. Granulation is when the color pigments separate in water, settle into the paper, and create a textured look when they dry. Figurative work depicts an identifiable subject, even when painted in a loose, impressionistic style.

Sketchbook

The sketchbook is the soul and the mind of an artist exposed. It is relaxed and, because of that, becomes a perfect laboratory for experimentation. Each sketch comes alive because of the artist’s personal experience, emotions, and memories of that moment.  And so, the sketchbook contains a visual story of the artist’s journey of wonder, hope, struggle, reflection, frustration, growth, confidence, and transformation. I always carry a small sketchbook, pen, and sometimes even a small painting kit in my bag for when an opportunity arises.

Reflections on Art, Life, and Italy

Supriya Kharod's watercolors and drawings of Italy serve as a catalyst for the anecdotes, reflections on the artist's process, and collection of life lessons featured here. This book weaves her transformative journeys through Italy, art, and life together seamlessly. Her stories and conversations are simple, yet powerful reminders that we all have so many experiences in life, in our own worlds. How do our stories serve as springboards for personal reflection and self-growth? Supriya's simple, yet deep, reflections serve as a reminder to all of us to use every opportunity life provides to reflect and grow. They are not only reflections on Italy and art, but deeper reflections on life.

The ABCs (Artist Statement - Bio - CV)

Artist Statement

I strive to depict the beautiful friendship between Water and Color.

My work is contemporary, visceral, and expressive, pushing the boundaries of watercolor norms. Traditional watercolor is generally more figurative realism. I prefer to explore abstraction and showcasing the granulating quality that is unique to watercolor.

My goals are:

1. to remove watercolor’s underdog stigma in the art world as being “too easy” or “for kids” (although most oil and acrylic painters say it is too difficult for them!)

2. to stretch and explore the potential of the medium itself

3. to share the joy watercolor brings to me, with my audiences

Every composition begins with a plan. But, it comes to life only when the loaded brush hits and mixes with the water on the paper’s surface. The pigment floats in the water and eventually settles where it wills, creating the beautiful granulation that is unique to this medium. Unlike oil and acrylic, which can be controlled and painted over multiple times, watercolor is transparent and has a mind of its own. So, an aspiring painter can either embrace the uncertainty and enjoy the journey, or call it “too hard” and decide to give up. I choose to embrace and enjoy.

Bio

Supriya Kharod is a contemporary watercolor artist who paints both semi-abstract and figurative works. She worked as an art director (B.A. in Advertising from Southern Methodist University), left ad agency life to pursue freelance graphic design, and ultimately, discovered her love for painting. Primarily self-taught, she now works exclusively in watercolor and has been painting professionally and exhibiting her art in local galleries and shows since 2017.

Supriya is influenced by Modernist methodologies—as seen in her contemporary take on traditional color field paintings. Modern art pushed the boundaries of figurative realism and impressionism, and even ventured into abstraction. So, Supriya leans into her graphic design background and approaches watercolor with a similar non-traditional sensibility. Her paintings have a colorful and highly-stylized, graphic vibe. By harmonizing unusual colors, using flowing shapes, and flattening perspectives, her paintings have a lively, expressive, and contemporary vibe.

In pushing the boundaries of watercolor norms, her goals are:
        1. to remove watercolor’s underdog stigma in the art world
        2. to stretch and explore the potential of the medium
        3. to share the joy watercolor brings to her, with her audiences

In 2021, Supriya published her first book Reflections on Art, Life, and Italy, which features her paintings and sketches of Italy, along with reflections on her art process and on life. In addition to her painting, Supriya is a second-degree black belt in taekwondo, a mother of three, serves on the City of Sunset Valley’s Arts Commission, and is a member of various art societies. Her Austin-themed prints are carried by Prima Dora and Prima Dora, Georgetown.
