Color Field Paintings
Inspired by the Color Field movement of the mid-1900s, my contemporary take harmonizes unusual colors, organic shapes, and a flattened perspective to invite the viewer into a highly-stylized, graphic world. These paintings command the attention of a room and start conversations.

The client wanted an abstract depiction of the natural world. After that, she left it up to my artistic vision. My inspiration was her backyard with its variety of plants and wildflowers. I also wanted to include her sweet dog, who trots around like she owns the place. This painting is a large-format watercolor—over twice the size of a standard, full-sheet watercolor.

Impressionist Paintings
What I learned from the Impressionist Masters is how to trick the viewer’s brain into thinking a subject looks real from a distance, just from how it is painted. So, my contemporary scenes are designed to be hung on the far side of a room, so they attract the viewer in for a closer look. These paintings literally pull people into a space.

Sketches
A sketchbook is a low-stakes way for artists to document their observations, experiments, challenges, and reflections. Sketches sometimes lead to larger paintings or just remain as little gems. I use my sketchbook to draw on location, document events, or test out color combinations and ideas for a larger painting later.
Reflections on Art, Life, and Italy
Supriya Kharod's watercolors and drawings of Italy serve as a catalyst for the anecdotes, reflections on the artist's process, and collection of life lessons featured here. This book weaves her transformative journeys through Italy, art, and life together seamlessly. Her stories and conversations are simple, yet powerful reminders that we all have so many experiences in life, in our own worlds. How do our stories serve as springboards for personal reflection and self-growth? Supriya's simple, yet deep, reflections serve as a reminder to all of us to use every opportunity life provides to reflect and grow. They are not only reflections on Italy and art, but deeper reflections on life.

ABC - Artist Statement + Bio + CV
Artist Statement
Watercolor is considered the underdog of the art world. But really, it’s a rich, transparent medium that gives off a ‘glowing-with-light’ effect when handled skillfully. Many oil and acrylic painters are intimidated by it, because you can’t cover your mistakes and the pigment can’t be controlled easily because it is suspended in water. For me, it’s the opposite... I strive to showcase the beautiful ‘friendship’ that happens when water and color mix of their own accord. By planning first and then giving up control to the medium, the final painting is able to reveal itself. As a result, watercolor has taught me to let go trying to control everything around me—and I have gained greater control over myself because of it.My paintings have a highly-stylized, contemporary vibe that is influenced by my graphic design background. My favorite themes are the Texas landscape, iconic landmarks of Austin, people, and anything that reflects my Indian heritage.
Bio
Supriya Kharod is a contemporary watercolor artist who paints both semi-abstract and impressionist works. Once upon a time, she was an art director at a multi-national ad agency and a freelance graphic designer, but ultimately discovered her true love was painting. Primarily self-taught, she works exclusively in watercolor and has been painting professionally and exhibiting her art since 2017. Supriya is influenced by the 20th century Modernists, who pushed the boundaries of realism and impressionism, and sometimes ventured into abstraction. Her contemporary take on Color Field paintings is heavily influenced by her graphic design background. By harmonizing unusual colors, creating interesting shapes, and flattening perspective, she pushes traditional watercolor norms and her paintings have a highly-stylized, contemporary vibe. Her Impressionist work is equally colorful and pulls the viewer closer into a painting.
In 2021, Supriya wrote and published her first book Reflections on Art, Life, and Italy, which features her paintings and sketches of Italy, along with reflections on her art process and on life. Additionally, Supriya is a second-degree black belt in taekwondo, a mother of three, serves on the City of Sunset Valley’s Arts Commission, and is a member of various art societies. Her Austin-themed prints are carried by Prima Dora and Prima Dora, Georgetown.
